Portland Community Hall
The largest community hall in the Township of Rideau Lakes, the Portland Community Hall sits along the shores of the Big Rideau Lake. Since the late 1940s, the hall has been used for everything from movie nights to New Year’s balls, firemen’s bingo to wedding receptions. It has even held a small fair complete with wrestling matches between local farmers, which saw bets rolling in from across the community.
Today, this well-equipped hall hosts seniors’ groups, tai chi classes, and girl guides, to name a few of its many uses. Left over from the days when the hall had an adjacent skating rink, an old skating shack still sits on the property. Now, with locals choosing to skate on the lake, the skate shack houses the local food bank and a cooperative clothing store. Of course, as with all rural community halls, fundraising events are ongoing, and they consistently bring members of this vibrant community together to celebrate and support this very important hub.
Birds of Chicago will perform at the Portland Community Hall on Thursday September 28th at 7:30 PM. This show is sold out.
